The dishes handed down by our ancestors are placed perfectly in the china cabinet only to be pulled for special occasions. They are painstakingly washed and placed back in order. Sometimes we sneak in and use two glasses that become our favorites without telling anyone. They are the token dishes—secretly used and gently placed back. Sometimes the right glass is the one we’re not supposed to be using.
