24x48 Spray-paint and Marker on Paper (Framed)
Interpretation is everything. The maker is a filter. This show comprises two distinct periods of work: the more recent series on watercolor paper was completed in the last ten years. The works on panel are from around 15 years ago. This is an exploration of how technique, process, and choice are unique to the artist and act as a filter that cannot, by its own nature, be replicated. This is apparent whether it be crocheting a quilt, carving a chain out of a wooden block, or doing Madlibs. These works were derived without the use of digital manipulation or imaging software. I take a found image and process it to a sufficient point using only a copy machine with factory presets. Next, I print transparencies for an overhead projector, and finally, I render the image by hand. I've become comfortable with a slight divergence in the image as its shadow is captured. As more and more creative endeavors move to the digital realm, the sentiment of the work, coupled with the analog technique, has grown in relevance over the 20 years since its creation.
