This piece is one of three from the Jump the Gun series captured during my time on the road in an RV. Driving out west, you find these scattered ruins along the highways and backroads: old gas stations, motels, and diners left to the wind. What strikes me is that they’re rarely torn down. Instead, they’re left standing, half-swallowed by weeds and weather, like monuments to their own disappearance. Age softens them, and nature begins to claim them back. There’s something about that process, about watching the earth slowly pull its creations home, that feels strangely comforting. It’s as if we are being called back to the source we long for inside of us all.
